general

Founded in 1973 as a honey producer, Madhava co-founder Bart Utley sold honey out of the back of his van in Boulder, CO. Madhava has since grown to become a recognized and trusted innovator in the sweetener category, dedicated to providing healthy alternatives to highly processed, refined sugars and artificial sweeteners. Today, Madhava offers its beloved honeys and agave along with an expanded portfolio of better-for-you sweet treats.

Madhava is a Sanskrit word meaning "Born of Honey" and is derived from the Sanskrit word madhu which means "sweet". We believe it is the perfect name for a true, natural foods company born out of the simple love for the sweet life!

organic honey

Honey will crystallize over time. This is a natural process for honey and means the honey you purchased is raw and of the finest quality. If your honey has crystalized, we recommend taking the lid off the glass jar and placing the jar in a pot of hot (not boiling) water. As the honey slowly heats, it will return to its liquid state in a few minutes.

Our honeys are not pasteurized. Our honey tastes superior because we protect the natural qualities with carefully controlled low temperature melting and simple straining. This allows the honey to retain its full flavor as well as its pollens and nutritional value.

We recommend you store your honey at room temperature. Even after opening, honey does not need to be refrigerated.

organic agave

In 2003, we were proud to be the first company to introduce organic agave to the U.S. market. Known then as the “super sweetener” agave nectar is made from the natural juice of the blue agave plant, organically grown and sustainably farmed in the Sierra Madres region of Mexico. Our all-natural, organic, Non-GMO Project Verified sweetener has continued to grow in popularity, and we’ve expanded our product line to include agave flavored syrups for pancakes, coffee, baking and more!

Our agave is organically grown and sustainably farmed in the Sierra Madres region of Mexico. The heart of the plant is pressed to extract the agave juice. The juice is then filtered to remove any plant debris. Once filtered, the juice is heated to achieve the sweet nectar and then filtered again to produce the varying flavor profiles.

Madhava’s agave (Light, Amber and Raw) is USDA certified organic, Non-GMO Project Verified, gluten free, allergen free and vegan. It is also low-glycemic which helps avoid energy spikes that may occur with other sugars. Agave is 1.4x sweeter than sugar so you can use less and reduce calories and added sugars.

Agave nectar is sweeter than sugar, so you can use less! In general, 2/3 cup of agave is equal to 1 cup of sugar. When cooking with agave, we recommend reducing all other liquids by ¼ cup.

We recommend you store your agave at room temperature. Even after opening, agave does not need to be refrigerated.

organic coconut sugar

Madhava Organic Coconut Sugar is grown and harvested sustainably in Indonesia. It is an organic, Non-GMO Project Verified, unrefined sweetener that is derived from the nectar of coconut palm tree blossoms. The nectar is boiled to evaporate the water and the remaining concentrated nectar is crystallized into sugar.

Surprisingly, it doesn’t taste a bit like the fruit of a coconut. It comes from the coconut blossoms (not the coconut fruit) and has its own subtle taste making it a perfect 1 to 1 replacement for refined sugar. Enjoy it in all your favorite things from baking to smoothies, coffee, tea and more!

No, coconut palm sugar and coconut sugar both come from the blossom of the coconut palm tree.

Organic coconut sugar contains naturally occurring nutrients such as magnesium, potassium, zinc, iron, B vitamins and amino acids. What more could you want from a sweetener?
