What is the Clean Label Project?

It’s one thing to say that you use only the most pure and natural ingredients, but it means even more when it’s independently verified. At Madhava, we’ve been dedicated to using only the cleanest, highest-quality ingredients that nature can provide for 46 years. But while we live and breathe that commitment, we also know that savvy, health-conscious consumers might want more than just our word for it. 

The Clean Label Project One of our core values has always been to maintain complete transparency between our processes and you, the consumer. To back that up, we partnered with The Clean Label Project, a nonprofit organization focused on health and transparency in consumer product labeling. 

The Clean Label Project’s mission is to educate consumers by identifying toxins in consumer products and sharing that data publicly, so you can make informed choices every time you shop.

Using scientific data and analysis, the Clean Label Project samples and tests top-selling consumer products for hundreds of environmental and industrial contaminants. They also inspect the nutritional quality of each ingredient, so that you know exactly what you’re getting in each tested item. Their analysis looks for toxins like heavy metals, by-products and other process-related contaminants. Products are then rated with a five-star system, five stars being highest quality and one star being poorest.

The Clean Label Project blind tests each product in an independent chemical lab. Each set of results is verified by two other labs.

Clean Label Project Evaluation Process: Heavy Metals + By-Product Contaminants + Process Contaminants + Nutritional Superiority. We weigh heavy metals highest in our scoring because scientific evidence suggests that they pose the greatest risks to human and pet health.

Results are published online and freely available to the public, so consumers can see where their favorite products rank. Why is this important? A lot of companies claim to be all-natural and organic, but that may only apply to a portion of their ingredients. And most of us know by now that “all-natural” can be very misleading. By analyzing and publishing test results on hundreds of brands, consumers can cut through the hype and know exactly what they’re buying.
